iPhone photos carry your GPS location by default. Drop one here — HEIC works directly — and download a clean copy. Nothing is uploaded.
Private by design: the photo is read and cleaned entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded anywhere — you can even load this page, go offline, and it still works.
With default settings, the iPhone camera stores your latitude and longitude in every photo, precise to a few meters. Since iOS 11 those photos are HEIC files — and most metadata tools still can't open them, which is why "convert to JPEG first" became the standard advice. You don't need to: drop the HEIC above and PixWash reads it directly, in your browser. The sample loaded on this page is a HEIC with GPS so you can see what the red callout looks like.
Converting HEIC to JPEG to strip metadata costs you twice: the image is re-encoded (quality loss) and you lose the format's smaller file size. PixWash does neither — it locates the EXIF and XMP records inside the HEIC container and wipes them in place. The compressed image data is untouched, the file stays a HEIC, and every pixel is bit-for-bit identical. Because the wipe is in-place, the cleaned file has the same size as the original.
Big social apps strip metadata on upload. The leaks are everywhere else: photos sent as email attachments, cloud-drive share links (iCloud, Drive and Dropbox links share the original file), "original quality" sends in chat apps, forums, classified listings, and AirDrop. If the original file reaches someone, so do the coordinates.
Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → "Never" stops the tagging entirely (you lose the Photos app's place-based browsing). Per-share: in the share sheet, tap "Options" at the top and switch Location off — that share gets a location-free copy while your library keeps the data. PixWash covers the third case: photos that already exist and need to go somewhere clean.
