Why raw files are dangerous to strip
A camera raw file is a TIFF-family container where the sensor data, the calibration data and the personal metadata all live behind offsets in the same tables. Rewrite the file to remove a tag and every strip/tile offset after it moves — one mistake and the raw won't decode. Worse, the vendor MakerNote is not just metadata: Nikon stores the sensor linearization table there and encrypts its color data against the camera serial number; Sony keeps the white-balance block behind it; Pentax keeps decode tables there too. We verified this the hard way — wiping a Pentax PEF's MakerNote makes a raw decoder report Corrupt data and lose the camera white balance, and a Nikon NEF fails the same way. That's why generic "EXIF removers" either refuse raws or silently break them.
How PixWash cleans a raw without breaking it
Nothing is moved. The GPS record is zeroed and hidden, timestamps, artist/copyright strings, user comments, serial-number tags and XMP packets are blanked where they sit, and metadata inside embedded JPEG previews (which usually carry a second copy of everything, GPS included) is wiped too. Every offset stays valid, the sensor data is untouched, and the file size doesn't change. Each supported format — Canon CR2, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Olympus ORF, Panasonic RW2, Pentax PEF, Fujifilm RAF, and DNG — was verified against real camera files from raw.pixls.us: after cleaning, a raw decoder produces bit-for-bit identical pixels with the camera white balance intact and zero errors.
The honest caveat: the MakerNote stays (in most raws)
Because decoding requires it, PixWash keeps the vendor MakerNote in CR2, NEF, ARW, ORF, PEF and RAF files — and flags it clearly, because it can embed the camera's serial number. Panasonic RW2 is the exception: its metadata lives in an embedded JPEG whose MakerNote isn't needed to decode the raw, so there it is wiped as well. If you need the serial gone from the other formats, convert the raw to DNG or export a JPEG/TIFF and clean that — DNG is spec'd to render without vendor data, so PixWash wipes a DNG's MakerNote and private data completely.
What raw metadata actually reveals
Capture timestamps to the subsecond, camera body and lens serial numbers (enough to link photos across accounts, or prove a specific camera took a photo), your name if you ever set the artist/copyright field in the camera menu, edit history via XMP if the file went through a raw processor, and GPS coordinates if your camera has (or pairs with) a location source.
