The newest format, the same old metadata
AVIF — the AV1-based image format most browsers now support — uses the same ISO container as HEIC. Alongside the compressed image it can carry an Exif item and an XMP item, exactly like its Apple cousin. The sample loaded above is an AVIF with camera tags and GPS coordinates so you can see the decoded result.
Where AVIF metadata comes from
Mostly conversion. Encode a JPEG to AVIF with metadata-preserving settings (the default in several tools, including common CLI flags like --exif) and the original's EXIF — GPS included — rides along into the .avif. If you're converting your photo library for the web, it's worth dropping a few outputs here to see what survived the trip.
How PixWash cleans AVIF
Same as HEIC: it parses the container's item index in your browser, finds the EXIF and XMP items, and wipes their bytes in place — the AV1 image data and container structure are untouched, so the file stays valid everywhere and the pixels are bit-for-bit identical. In-place wiping means the file size stays the same; the metadata's space is blanked rather than reclaimed.
