Yes, PNGs have metadata
PNG files are built from chunks. The image is IHDR + IDAT (+ a palette when indexed); everything else is ancillary — and much of it is metadata: tEXt, zTXt and iTXt chunks hold arbitrary key-value text (title, author, description, software, source URL, XML packets), eXIf holds full EXIF data including GPS (standardized in 2017 and increasingly common), and tIME records the last modification time.
Where PNG metadata comes from
Screenshot tools and editors are the usual sources: many write a Software or Creation Time entry, Adobe apps embed XMP packets in iTXt, and some generators record the full parameter set used to create the image in a text chunk — which can be far more revealing than camera EXIF. How PixWash cleans PNGs
It walks the chunk list and keeps only what the image needs: the critical chunks plus safe display chunks (transparency, gamma, color profile, animation for APNG). Text, EXIF, time, private and unknown chunks are dropped. The IDAT image data is copied through byte-for-byte — zero quality change, since PNG is lossless and no re-encoding happens.
A note on screenshots
Screenshots rarely carry GPS, but they can carry timestamps and software fingerprints — and the pixels themselves are the bigger risk (usernames, tabs, notifications). PixWash handles the chunks; cropping is on you.
