WebP carries metadata too

WebP is a RIFF container. Alongside the compressed image data it can hold an EXIF chunk (same format as JPEG EXIF: camera, timestamps, GPS) and an XMP chunk (Adobe's XML metadata). Converters are the main source: turn a JPEG into WebP with metadata-preserving settings and the EXIF — GPS included — rides along into the .webp.

How PixWash cleans WebP

It walks the RIFF chunk list, drops the EXIF and XMP chunks, clears the corresponding flags in the VP8X feature header, and fixes up the container size. The compressed image data (VP8, VP8L or ANIM frames) is copied through untouched — no re-encode, no quality change, works for lossy, lossless and animated WebP alike.

Checking a WebP you downloaded

Sites increasingly serve WebP, and most strip metadata server-side — but files from converters, scrapers or "save image as" chains are a mixed bag. Drop one above: the findings table shows exactly which chunks it carries. If it's already clean, PixWash tells you so.

HEIC, the other one

iPhone HEIC files work here too — PixWash wipes HEIC metadata in place, no conversion to JPEG needed.
