Raw files are the worst leakers
A raw file is the original: nothing between the camera and the bytes. A DNG carries everything the camera knew — GPS coordinates, body and lens serial numbers, exact timestamps, your name if it's set in-camera, the original raw file name, vendor MakerNote data, and Adobe's DNGPrivateData block. Sharing an "original raw" with a client, a contest, or a stock site shares all of it.
The preview trap
DNGs embed one or more JPEG previews so browsers and file managers can show thumbnails without decoding the raw. Those previews are full JPEGs with their own EXIF — often including a second copy of the GPS coordinates. Tools that clean only the main directory miss them. PixWash walks every directory in the file, previews included, and wipes the personal records in each.
Why in-place wiping matters for raw
A raw processor keys its color rendition off calibration tags and needs every byte offset intact. Rewriting a DNG to remove tags is exactly the operation that produces "file appears to be damaged" errors. PixWash never rewrites: it overwrites the personal values where they sit — GPS zeroed, strings blanked, MakerNote and DNGPrivateData wiped — while the raw image data, calibration tags and file structure stay byte-for-byte untouched. Same file size, same compatibility, pixels provably identical.
What's kept, and the honest caveats
Kept: camera make/model, UniqueCameraModel and all calibration/structural tags — raw processors need them to render at all. Caveats: in proprietary camera raws (Canon CR2, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW) the vendor MakerNote is required to decode the image — Nikon encrypts color data against the serial number stored inside it — so there it is kept and flagged rather than wiped (verified with a raw decoder: pixels bit-identical after cleaning); and because the wipe is in place, the cleaned file is the same size as the original.
