Metadata removal should not cost image quality. PixWash edits bytes, not pixels — the image data is copied through untouched.
Private by design: the photo is read and cleaned entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded anywhere — you can even load this page, go offline, and it still works.
Metadata lives in its own segments of the file, separate from the compressed image. So there are two approaches: byte-level removal deletes the metadata segments and copies the image data through untouched; re-encoding decodes the image to pixels and saves a fresh file without metadata. The first is lossless by construction. The second re-compresses your JPEG at whatever quality setting the tool picked — every pass adds generation loss, softening detail and adding artifacts around edges.
Compare file sizes: byte-level removal shrinks the file by roughly the metadata size (often 10–60 KB) and never changes the dimensions or compression. A re-encoder produces a file whose size differs wildly from the original. PixWash shows the exact byte delta next to the download button — and its output pixels are verifiably bit-for-bit identical to the input.
Cameras often store the image sensor-side-up plus an EXIF "rotate 90°" tag. Strip that tag and some viewers show the photo sideways. PixWash warns when it detects this and offers an opt-in "apply rotation" that bakes the orientation into the pixels — which does re-encode, once, because it has to. It's off by default and clearly labeled.
For PNG (and lossless WebP) the distinction matters less for quality but still matters for speed and fidelity: PixWash copies the image chunks through byte-for-byte there too — what comes out is your image, not a tool's reinterpretation of it.
