Private by design: the photo is read and cleaned entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded anywhere — you can even load this page, go offline, and it still works.
The problem with "online EXIF viewers"
Checking what private data a photo contains by uploading it to a stranger's server is backwards — the check itself is the leak. Most EXIF-viewer sites work exactly that way. PixWash parses the file in your browser with JavaScript: the bytes are read locally, decoded locally, and nothing is transmitted. Load the page, go offline, and it still works.
What you'll see
The full decoded tag table: camera make/model, lens, exposure settings, original and digitized timestamps, software used, artist/copyright fields, body and lens serial numbers if present, GPS coordinates plotted on a map link, XMP packets, IPTC captions and keywords, JPEG comments, and any data hiding after the image's official end. The sample photo above shows a typical set.
Reading the interesting tags
DateTimeOriginal is when the shutter fired; DateTime updates when the file is edited — a mismatch means the photo was processed. Software reveals editing tools. BodySerialNumber uniquely identifies the physical camera across every photo it ever took (why that matters). Orientation is why some photos display sideways after naive stripping — PixWash warns about it and can bake the rotation in.
And if you want it gone
The same page removes it: one click downloads a clean copy with the metadata deleted at the byte level and the pixels untouched.
Only have a link, not the file?
If the photo is already published somewhere and all you have is its URL, PageDate — a sibling tool — fetches the image server-side and reads the EXIF capture timestamp, XMP dates and PNG date chunks from the link alone, weighing them into an honest estimate of when the photo was taken and posted (dates only: it never displays GPS coordinates). PixWash is for files on your device, where nothing should be uploaded; PageDate is for files already on the web.
