Why TIFF metadata is different
In a JPEG, metadata lives in separate segments you can simply delete. In a TIFF, metadata tags sit in the same directory structures (IFDs) that describe the image: the tag that says "artist" is a sibling of the tag that says where the pixel strips are. GPS gets its own sub-directory, XMP hides in tag 700, IPTC in tag 33723, Photoshop's resource block in tag 34377 — all referenced by byte offsets that also anchor the image data.
Why PixWash wipes instead of rewriting
Deleting tags from a TIFF properly means rebuilding the file and relocating every offset — including every strip or tile of image data. One bug corrupts the image. So PixWash does something more conservative and provable: it finds each personal record and overwrites its bytes in place — string tags become blanks, the GPS directory's values are zeroed and the GPS pointer removed from view, XMP becomes an empty packet. Offsets never move, pixels are bit-for-bit identical, the file opens everywhere it did before. Honest trade-off: the file size doesn't shrink, because the space is blanked rather than reclaimed.
What a TIFF typically reveals
Scanner or camera software and firmware strings, creation and modification timestamps, artist/copyright set once in a preferences dialog years ago, Windows Explorer's title/author/keywords tags, camera and lens serial numbers, GPS coordinates — and, in edited files, Photoshop's XMP with document IDs and edit history. What's kept, and why
Camera make and model, plus every structural and calibration tag — dimensions, compression, color, strip layout. Those aren't personal, and removing them breaks the file. PixWash lists both groups before you download so nothing is taken on faith.
